Specs from SolarEdge's Nexis announcements and Tesla's Powerwall 3 datasheet (North America, 2024). kWh is how much energy is stored; kW is how much can run at once.

03 How it works

Flip the grid off and watch what stays on.

Tap the switch. This is what a battery does for a house on an ordinary day and on the night the power goes out.

Grid on

An ordinary day

Your solar charges the battery. At night and when grid rates are high, the house draws on stored power instead.

  1. 1

    Capacity

Nexis comes in 5 kWh blocks, from 5 to 80 kWh. Powerwall 3 stores 13.5 kWh per unit, up to four units.

Sized to your home in your free design.

  2. 2

    Backup time

Depends on what is running. A/C drains it faster than lights and a fridge.

  3. 3

    Weather

Powerwall 3 is rated for indoor and outdoor install.

04 Battery sizes

Pick the size that matches the outage you picture.

Storage is measured in kWh. More kWh means more of the house runs for longer. Not sure? Pick any card and we size it with you.

These sizes are built from 5 kWh SolarEdge Nexis blocks, one to four of them. Prefer Tesla? We also install Powerwall 3, in 13.5 kWh units.

  • 5kWh

    One Nexis block

    Savings only

Store your solar and use it when grid rates are high.

    • 5 kWh of storage
    • Built for bill savings

No backup power during an outage.

  • 5kWh

    One Nexis block

    Essentials backup

Savings plus backup for the circuits you pick, on a sub panel.

    • 5 kWh of storage
    • Sub panel for key loads (select breakers)
    • Keeps the fridge, lights, microwave and Wi-Fi running
  • 10kWh

    Two Nexis blocks

    Whole home

More capacity for a broader range of home loads.

    • 10 kWh of storage
    • Can cover most home needs
    • Whole home backup

10 kWh goes quickly with big loads running, so you manage usage during an outage.

  • 15kWh

    Three Nexis blocks

    Whole home plus

More confidence and longer backup for your whole home.

    • 15 kWh of storage
    • Capable of whole home backup
    • A balance of capacity and value
  • 20kWh

    Four Nexis blocks

    Whole home large

The most capacity, for extended backup and larger homes.

    • 20 kWh of storage
    • Whole home backup for longer
    • Suited to larger homes and higher usage

09 Questions

Straight answers, including the ones we are still confirming.

Which battery will I get?

We lead with SolarEdge Nexis and also install Tesla Powerwall 3. Your designer recommends one for your home, your electrical panel and what you want kept on, and tells you why.

What happens when the power goes out? How fast does it switch over?

The battery takes over and keeps running the circuits it covers: the ones you pick on the essentials size, or the whole home on the larger sizes. The savings only size does not provide backup.

Tony to confirm: switchover wording and time for each battery

How long will the battery last during an outage?

It depends on what is running. Lights, a fridge and Wi-Fi draw far less than central air or an electric range, so A/C drains it faster. A bigger battery, and recharging from solar, both stretch it. Your design shows your home's loads against each size.

Tony to confirm: backup hours per size

Battery or generator: which is right for me?

A standby generator runs on fuel and needs regular maintenance, and runs as long as it has fuel. A battery needs no fuel and makes no noise, and on an ordinary day it can store power for when rates are high, but it holds a set amount of energy. We will tell you honestly which fits your home.

Tony to confirm: whether we offer generators

Do I need solar to get a battery? Can I add one to my existing solar?

If you already have solar, say so in the survey and we design the battery around the system you have. If you do not, we can look at solar and a battery together.

Tony to confirm: battery without solar, and adding one to existing solar

What does it cost? Is there a zero down option?

It depends on the size, your electrical panel and what you want backed up, so we price it from your free design instead of guessing here. You see the number before you decide anything.

Tony to confirm: zero down options for batteries

Are there tax credits or incentives?

We do not promise any credit or incentive on this page. The rules depend on how the system is owned and they change, so check with a tax professional before counting on one.

Tony to confirm: tax credit and incentive wording

What warranty comes with it?

SolarEdge Nexis and Tesla Powerwall 3 each carry a 10-year manufacturer warranty. Ask on your call about our own workmanship warranty.

Tony to confirm: workmanship warranty terms

Which states and cities do you serve?

We install in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana. The survey checks your ZIP code.

How long does install take? Do you handle permits and utility approval?

Yes, we handle permits and utility approval. Your designer gives you the timeline for your home.
